Setting the standard
Meeting our responsibilities
As the leading operator of carrier-neutral data centres in Europe, we are committed to excellence and setting the benchmark in our environmental strategy and quality standards.
As a data centre operator we recognise that our main environmental impact comes from the power we use to run our facilities. In order to reduce our energy consumption and cut carbon emissions, we use innovative technologies that dramatically improve the efficiency of data centre power and cooling.
Many of our data centres use free cooling systems, which enable significant savings when the external ambient temperatures fall below a certain level. We have also invested in technology that measures air and heat streams, which we use to advise customers on the most energy-efficient configuration of their equipment.
In addition to these initiatives, a number of our data centres use energy from renewable sources including those in Paris and Stockholm, Amsterdam and our new Powergate facility in London.
We believe we are building some of the most energy efficient facilities in the world today. For example, to make use of waste heat from the data centre, a greenhouse has been constructed on one side of our new Condorcet Paris data centre through an agreement with the French National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA – L’Institut national de la recherché agronomique) (read an article from The Sunday Times).
Environmental leadership
We adhere to stringent industry standards, and we lead the market in environmental initiatives.
TelecityGroup has achieved certification to ISO 14001, the environmental management system standard.
ISO 14001 is an internationally-recognised accreditation for organisations that demonstrate superior environmental management. The certificate highlights TelecityGroup’s ongoing commitment to both maximise the energy efficiency of its existing data centre estate and develop innovative new facilities.
The Carbon Trust Standard is the world’s first carbon award that requires organisations to measure, manage and reduce carbon emissions across their own operations. The certificate constitutes 50 percent of the Early Action Metric for judging performance in the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme (formerly known as the Carbon Reduction Commitment) which started in April 2010.
We help influence both developers and end users of data centre technology through our membership of the Green Grid. This global consortium seeks to provide industry-wide recommendations on best practice, metrics and technologies that improve overall data centre and business computing energy efficiency.
We are also holders of Corporate Status with regard to the European Code of Conduct for data centres, a new initiative to provide benchmarks for data centre efficiency and best practice. Each one of our data centres has been audited and is operated to the Code's best practices for maximising energy efficiency.
In recognition of our commitment to environmental best practice we were recently voted 1st in our sector and 16th overall’ for Community and Environmental Responsibility’ in Management Today magazine's annual 'Britain’s Most Admired UK Companies’.

By being the first data centre operator to subscribe to this offer, TelecityGroup shows its ongoing leadership in exploring and adopting technologies which help minimise the impact of its operations on the environment and maximise energy efficiency in the data centre. EDF’s “Equilibre+” offer certifies that the equivalent of 21 % of the electricity consumed by TelecityGroup will be generated from renewable sources of energy and guarantees a neutral impact in terms of C02 emissions.
TelecityGroup is a member of the FTSE4Good Index. The main objectives for the FTSE4Good Index Series are to provide a tool for responsible investors to identify and invest in companies that meet globally recognised corporate responsibility standards: to provide asset managers with a socially responsible investment benchmark and a tool for socially responsible investment products; and to contribute to the development of responsible business practice around the world.
